  • June 23rd, 2011 - CERMi-RSAEM Seminar - Dr. Supriya GARIKIPATI

Microcredit and Women’s Empowerment: Understanding Paradoxical Outcomes Through the Lens of Time Use Data

Paper presentation by Dr. Supriya Garikipati (University of Liverpool, UK) from 12.15pm to 1.45pm, at the Seminar Room R42.2.110 of the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management (ULB).

This seminar was jointly organized by the Centre for European Research in Microfinance (CERMi) and the Research Seminars in Applied Economics and Management (RSAEM).

Abstract: This paper examines the impact credit (targeted at women) has on male and female time use and uses this analysis to explore the linkages between microfinance and female empowerment. The argument is that time use is an important variable to study these linkages because if credit is expected to impact on livelihoods, then almost the first thing to shift will be the way an individual allocates his or her work time. Time use also captures both short term and long term changes and hence does not suffer from the time lag that some other impact variables do. Other than this, the additional advantage is that it is objectively measurable. Despite these advantages the microfinance evaluation literature has ignored time use. In addressing this gap, this paper makes an important contribution.
